Shrub land picnicking and lodging opportunities at a 6500-foot elevation. Good views of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. Pig, sheep and bird hunting nearby. Dry and clear weather with cold nights. Due to a brush fire to the surrounding area, conditions may become extremely dusty. Periodic military maneuvers nearby may disrupt the peace and quiet of the area.
Mauna Kea State Recreation Area rents housekeeping cabins which can accommodate up to 6 persons. These cabins are available on weekends only due to water system problems. NO WATER available except to operate toilet. NOTE: As of October 1, 2009, linen, bedding and towels are no longer provided in the Mauna Kea cabins. Cabin keys issued to permittee by caretaker only during check in time from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
Hawaii Residents: $50 per cabin per night.
PLEASE NOTE: Cabins may be reserved up to 30 days in advance of check-in. Online reservations for the cabins at Mauna Kea must be made at least 7 days in advance of check-in date. Permits are not transferable. Printed permit must be signed and in your possession while lodging.
On Saddle Road (Highway 200), 35.1 miles west of downtown Hilo. (Note: Car rental companies may prohibit or impose conditions for use of their vehicles on the Saddle Road.)
Permits must be obtained at least seven (7) days in advance of occupancy date. Check in is at 1:00 p.m., no later than 4:00 p.m. Check out by 10:00 a.m. Key pick up at caretaker's cabin at park upon check in. IMPORTANT--No cabin keys will be issued after 4:00 p.m. and you will be unable to occupy cabin; fees shall be forfeited. KEYS WILL BE ISSUED TO PERMITTEE ONLY. Only names listed are covered by this permit.
