Kalopa State Recreation Area State Parks Camping



Description

Lodging, picnicking and easy family nature hike (0.7-mile loop trail) in a native 'ohi'a forest at a 2000-foot elevation. Trail passes through the beginnings of an arboretum of the Island's native plants. Additional trails in the adjoining forest reserve, including a 2-mile horse loop trail.

Kalopa State Recreation Area rents duplex cabins.  Cabin accommodations consist of 8-person units provided with bunk beds, toilet facilities, and hot shower. No linen, bedding and towels.  Smoking, including E-cigarettes, and the use of tobacco products in State Parks, is prohibited.

1.  Guests must provide their own liquid hand soap and hand sanitizer.

2.  Effective July 14, 2020 Check-in time is now 3:00 pm; Check-out time is at 10:00 a.m.

Cabin Rates: 3 consecutive night minimum

** Hawaii Residents:  $70 per cabin per night.               *** Non-residents: $100 per cabin per night

Check-in: 3:00 p.m., Check-Out no later than 10:00 a.m.

  • Online reservations for the cabins at Kalopa must be made at least seven (7) days in advance of check-in date.  No changes will be accepted to an existing permit less than seven (7) days prior to the check-in date. 
  • No refunds will be given if requested within 15 days of your first scheduled camping or lodging day - all payments will be forfeited.  
  • PERMIT MUST BE PRINTED, SIGNED AND IN YOUR POSSESSION WHILE CAMPING OR LODGING.

Kalopa also offers tent camping opportunities with roofed shelters.

Camping Rates:

Hawaii Residents:  $20 per campsite per night for up to 4 persons.

Non-residents:  $30 per campsite per night for up to 4 persons.

*chlidren 2 and under free

Permits are not transferable.

Camping Permits are currently available 90-days in advance.

 



Location

At 2000 feet elevation at end of Kalaniai Road off of Kalopa Road, 3 miles inland from Mamalahoa Highway (Highway 19); 5 miles southeast of Honoka'a.



Special Conditions

LODGING - Check-in with park caretaker at 3:00 p.m. Check-out no later than 10:00 a.m. Please contact park for late check-ins due to unforeseen circumstances or emergencies. Park day contact number (808) 775-8852.

IMPORTANT ACCESS INFO: PRINTED PERMIT REQUIRED FOR ACCESS TO YOUR CABIN. Locks to your cabin are combination locks. The last four (4) digits of your permit number is your access code.

 
Permits must be obtained at least seven (7) days prior to first occupancy date. No changes will be accepted to an existing permit less than seven (7) days prior to the check-in date shown on your permit. No linen, blankets, towels provided. Clean cabin before departure.

TENT CAMPING - Permitted campers may occupy camp site from 1:00 p.m. on first day of reservation and leave site by 12:00 p.m. on departure day. Do not drive vehicles into campgrounds; park in marked stalls only. No open fires except in designated grills. Smoking, including E-cigarettes, and the use of tobacco products in State Parks, is prohibited.  Camp site and surrounding area must be cleaned and fires put out before leaving. 


Permits are not transferable. There may be no cell phone reception at this park.

Refund Policy

Refunds must be requested at least 15 days in advance of your check-in date. No online refunds inside of 15 days to check-in.
To request a refund, login and click on “My Reservations”, then select the appropriate "Refund/Cancellation" link and follow the instructions.

Refunds for credit cards minus service fee and cancellation fee ($5), will be credited back to your card. Card must be the same as original purchase.
To request a refund less than 15 days in advance, you must email an appeal, with reason, to <DLNR.DSP.Permits@hawaii.gov>  Appeals are evaluated on a case-by-case basis and may not be approved.
You may add additional days to an existing permit (up to the maximum allowable consecutive nights stay), or you may switch dates entirely, availability permitting. Additional lodging fees, as well as a change fee, will apply and must be paid for at the time of the change. CHANGES TO DATES OF STAY MUST BE MADE MORE THAN 7 DAYS PRIOR TO YOUR DATE OF CHECK-IN. WITHIN 7 DAYS, NO DATE CHANGES ARE ALLOWED.
However, cancellation or reductions in dates MUST BE MADE AT LEAST 15 PRIOR TO YOUR DATE OF CHECK-IN. WITHIN 15 DAYS, NO REDUCTION IN DATE CHANGES ARE ALLOWED.
Availability permitting, yes, within the same park, you may switch your campsite number if there is space.
No switching parks allowed. To change your stay to another park, you need to cancel your permit, request a refund more than 15 days before check-in date, and purchase a new permit for your desired site.
There is a $3 fee to change your dates of stay, to switch campsite number, or to add guests.  There is no change fee to add days, but you will incur the additional camping costs for extra nights.
 
REFUNDS/CHANGES DUE TO SEVERE WEATHER AND PARK CLOSURES:
In the event that severe weather (flash floods/tropical storms or hurricanes) is forecasted to affect a park area, or forces a park closure, permittees will be notified and given the option to either revise their dates to a future stay, or receive a refund.  Inquiries regarding these situations can be directed to <DLNR.DSP.Permits@hawaii.gov>.
